Ishbi-Erra
(reigned ca. 2017-1985 b.c.)
   A ruler of the Sumerian city-state of Isin, whose rebellious activities helped to weaken and bring about the collapse of the empire now called the Third Dynasty of Ur. Ishbi-Erra started out as a soldier and army officer in the empire. He must have acquitted himself well because King Ibbi-Sin (reigned ca. 2026-2004 b.c.) soon placed him in charge of the city of Isin. But Ishbi-Erra then betrayed the king's trust. The realm was already faltering under the strain of Amorite tribes migrating from the northwest and raids by the Elamites from the east; and Ishbi-Erra took advantage of the situation by declaring Isin independent from Ur. He also took control of the city of Nippur and even made alliances with some of Ur's enemies. After the Elamites sacked Ur, causing the fall of its empire, Ishbi-Erra proclaimed himself the rightful heir to the Ur dynasts in the region; perhaps for this reason, the Su-merian King List lists him as the first monarch of a new line of rulers, the so-called First Dynasty of Isin.
